In order to meet the growing needs of our church and the surrounding community, Church of the Atonement started looking into the next phase of expanding our facilities a little over 4 years ago.
"The communities round about us are developing and expanding rapidly. The majority of people moving into these new developments are unchurched. Either they belong to no church or do not attend one. These are ‘white to the harvest.’ It is just as important that our mission be to reach these ‘loved ones’ in our community as it is to reach those in a foreign land.”
This statement isn't from our current project but came from our church building project back in 1966. Truly our vision and our commitment to both our people and our community hasn't faltered nor changed.
Update: June 05, 2008
As of April 30, we were 41% of the way to completion of the
renovation. In recent weeks, heavy
rainfall has caused water problems in the lower level, as the narthex roof had
been removed for installation of steel beams. By now the new roof should be on, putting an end to the interior
flooding.
Our own congregation as well as everyone in the neighborhood has been
wondering what is going on with the houses. Their demolition was put on hold by Park and Planning back in
January. After a change in direction
from Park and Planning as to what was required of us, on May 14 we filed all the
documents they requested for what is called an amended forest conservation
plan. At the time of this writing (June
4), we are still waiting for the approval. Once received, the subcontractor in charge of demolition will be given
the green light. Hopefully they can
begin work within two weeks of notification.
There have been some issues raised by the Fire Marshall’s office which
have delayed certain interior areas of work. However, the concerns have been addressed and we have finally reached
agreement on how to proceed. Once the
paperwork is in order, we should be on our way again.
Despite the apparent setbacks, RMJ’s supervisors do not feel we are
behind schedule—yet. Weather will
continue to have a say in how smoothly the project continues, as will the
building inspectors whose visits are required at certain intervals of the
project. We are still looking toward the
fall for completion, though, and Lord willing, it will happen!
