Overcoming Sin & Temptation Print E-mail
Since Pastor Carr has suggested something "Owen", I thought I'd join in.  Recently my mens group decided to read Owen's thesis entitled 'Of the Mortification of Sin in Believers' from the recently edited book 'Overcoming Sin & Temptation' by Kelly M. Kapic and Justin Taylor.  As Pastor Carr stated, if you know Owen you know how difficult he can be to read. This edit goes a long way in assisting the reader tread thru the depths of his writings.
This thesis has made a larger impact on my understanding of my personal role in regards to sin than anything I've ever previously, read, heard or been taught. Owen packs more into one sentence than most contemporary authors can say in an entire chapter. The pearls of wisdom gained from his writing far surpass the trials of reading them.

For some more thoughts you can check out my blog post here, or some excellent reviews by Tim Challies here.
John Owen On The Christian Life Print E-mail
Pastor Fred Carr recommends John Owen 'On The Christian Life'

I'm always interested in reading books on Christian experience.  This one is written by the pastor of one of the largest ARP churches in the denomination. It's a summary of the thoughts about Christian living written by the great puritan theologian John Owen. If you know Owen, you know he's not easy to read, but Ferguson has made it understandable.
I especially appreciate the summary of Owen's thought on sanctification - being transformed into the likeness of Jesus. Owen helped me realize that this is the spiritual battle. I gained from him a greater depth of understanding the "importance of watching and praying that I enter not into temptation"
